Being home-based entrepreneurs, my husband and I were very involved with teaching our child about finance. These life lessons are just as much a gift as the money you contribute to your kiddo's education. Consider giving them that valuable experience. Make sure that your children receive a passbook so they can see the progress of their savings efforts, as well as the interest that accrues.
More moms and dads will face tough questions about whether to bail out their kids, and how to structure the aid if they do. Our kids haven't known much deprivation, either. Sure, they've seen pictures of Haitian mothers making mud pies to feed their children, they hear about American children with no homes, and the biggest horror of all, no toys. When your kids are ready to move out on their own they may already have many creative business ideas that they want to pursue. Encourage them, but also encourage them to go to school and pay for it.
I am always inspired by the things parents do to help their kids build a solid understanding of money and budgeting.I know in some cultures it's considered a duty for kids to take care of the parents in old age, a cultural social security plan. I'm curious what someone from that background but raised in America thinks of it. Thankfully, parents of young kids have time on their side, along with savings tools that allow family and friends to help save. For example, state-sponsored 529 plans allow grandparents and family friends to contribute funds for college, and some state plans can be opened for as little as $250 with $50 per month contributions.
Though some parents do a good job teaching their kids, some live paycheck to paycheck and kids follow suit. They get jobs at younger ages to earn money that they spend without giving a thought to money management. Setting goals this early, no matter how simple they may be, will help the kids aim for the future.
When it comes to money, I think it's important that kids get their hands dirty.
They need to receive a set amount of cash to call their "own." Heck, it's easy to ask Grandpa to buy something for them. Well, definitely buy your kids the necessities - the things that meet their daily needs, like food, clothing, personal hygiene items, and school supplies. But then have your kids work by doing things like making their bed, doing dishes, or taking out the trash in order to receive their allowance. Please note I assume you have taken care of you before you start saving for your kids. If not please focus on taking care of your financial needs so that you are in the best position to help your children go to college.
Teach your kids about responsible credit card use, late-payment fines and the dangers of debt before they go to college. If you are nervous about their overspending, make an agreement where you can check their balance online, find a pre-paid card, or simply don't let them open an account until they are out of school and have a full-time job (they will thank you for it after they have graduated debt-free). Teenagers should already understand the basics of personal finance and budgeting and be allowed to make their own financial decisions, with your guidance. Whatever the case, encourage them to budget and not to spend their entire income on personal desires just because they have it to spend.
