People have been having yard sales for decades. Somehow over the past few years, going "Yard Selling" of having a "Yard Sale" has become a part of our American Culture. There aren't too many people who can say that they haven't gone to a yard sale in their lifetime, or had one of their own. The idea of having a yard sale is quite ingenious. The history of the Yard Sale is still a mystery. Who knows when, where or how the Yard Sale was first originated, but it was a darn good idea for making money, meeting new people, connecting with the community, and cleaning out your closets and knick knacks at the same time.
When spring and summer hit, Yard Sales can be found in neighborhoods all across the country. There are even self proclaimed yard sale junkies who shop these yard sales religiously. Most often people are shopping for good deals on furniture, electronics, books, housewares, knick knacks, and clothing. Who would have ever thought that one mans junk could end up being another mans treasure. Listed below are the top five sought after yard sale items. If you are looking to make some quick cash, make sure you have plenty of these items on your yard sale display tables.
5. Clothing- Especially baby clothing and childrens clothing. These are always hot sellers at yard sales. Outfits can be priced as low as fifty cents to a couple of dollars. Baby clothing that is in good, clean condition are fast moving items. Children grow so quickly that these items may have only been used a couple of times. Sets are particularly hot selling items. Children grow so fast that it isn't a bad idea to shop yard sales. Why spend a fortune at the department store for something your child may only get use out of for a few months.
4. Knick Knacks- From little garden statues, candles, glassware, silverware, and electronic appliances- these always bring in fast money. The american consumer loves knick knacks, that is why we all have so many of them. We are always looking for a bargain, and what better place can you find one than at your neighbors yard sale. With some cleaning and polishing, your used item can be good as new.
3. Furniture- College age kids are always looking for cheap furniture for their dorm rooms. Love seats, desks, futons, recliners, small tables and chairs, refurbished items, and book shelves. Most college kids don't have the money to go out and buy new sets of furniture so this is one item that will be a hot seller in the summer time. Keep these items reasonably priced and remember if you aren't using it and it's been taking up space in your basement or garage...you probably won't miss it anyways. You can make a small profit and feel good knowing you helped a young person get a start in their new life. A quick tip to make fast money is to hit the flea markets and find items that you can refurbish yourself...whether it is adding a coat of paint or varnish to adding some upholstery..you can turn around and make a nice chunk of change off of these items.
2. Books- Paperback and hardback books are always great sellers. These are low priced items that offer hours of enjoyment for the yard sale customer. How To books are great sellers because people are always wanting to educate themselves. Why spend twenty dollars on a book at the local bookstore when you can find a used book at a yard sale for a buck. Yard sale shoppers love buying low priced paperbacks especially in the thriller, horror, and suspense genre. Clean out your bookshelf and get these types of books out on a banquet table.
1. Electronics- From DVD Players, VCR's, VHS tapes, to DVD's- these items are always a number one seller. These are always going to be popular items. DVD's and electronics tend to be high priced items at your local department store or wholesale store. People just aren't willing to fork out twenty dollars on a DVD these days. You can find good condition DVD's and VHS at a yard sale for a dollar. This is not at all uncommon. So if you plan to have a yard sale of your own, dig through your collection and clean out the ones you can live without. Keep the ones that you might watch over and over.
So..if you are looking to make some fast money this summer and clean out some junk at the same time, a yard sale is a great idea. Stock your tables with the hot sellers and watch the people fight for parking spaces as they travel far and wide to raid your stuff. Keep plenty of change on hand, plastic bags, and boxes for your yard sale customers. Make your yard sale signs large and bright, add some balloons to make your yard sale highly visible from every corner of the street. With this approach you can easily make a couple hundred dollars in an afternoon. Not bad for a days work. On top of that you might have a little less clutter in your home when it is all said and done.
